How to use

  1. Add your text Type or paste Urdu into the box. Articles, essays, captions and messages all work.
  2. Review the underlines Red wavy lines mark words not in the dictionary. Gold lines mark Arabic letters (ي ك ه) where Urdu uses ی ک ہ.
  3. Pick a suggestion Tap an underlined word to see suggestions. Choose one to fix it in your text, or ignore it if the word is correct.
  4. Copy the corrected text Use "Next mistake" to jump through the rest, then copy your corrected text.

Why Urdu needs its own spell checker

Most word processors either have no Urdu spell checking at all or underline every Urdu word in red. Phone keyboards correct Urdu only partly, and Urdu text copied between apps collects errors that are hard to see: a missing letter, a ص typed as س, or a word in Arabic letters that looks almost right.

These mistakes matter. A misspelled headline is embarrassing in print, a wrong letter in a name can make it unfindable in a search, and teachers mark spelling in exams and assignments. This tool checks every word against a large Urdu dictionary, shows you what looks wrong, and suggests the most likely correct word.

What it checks

  • Words not in the dictionary. Each word is looked up in a list of more than 107,000 Urdu words, with diacritics ignored. Inflected forms of known words are accepted too: کتابوں from کتاب, لڑکیاں from لڑکی, پڑھتے from پڑھنا.
  • Arabic look-alike letters. ي ك ه in place of ی ک ہ / ھ, marked in gold. The suggestion uses the same word-aware ہ/ھ logic as our repair tool, so پڑهتا becomes پڑھتا, not پڑہتا.
  • Missing spaces. Two words run together are split: کتابیںاور → کتابیں اور.

How suggestions are chosen

Suggestions come from three sources: the dictionary’s own table of letters people commonly confuse (س ص ث, ز ذ ض ظ, ت ط, ہ ح ھ), single-letter edits (a missing, extra, swapped or wrong letter), and missing spaces. Candidates are ranked by how small the change is and how common the resulting word is, so everyday words come first.

Worked examples

Written Suggested What went wrong
خوبسورت خوبصورت س instead of ص
تعلییم تعلیم an extra ی
مہبت محبت ہ instead of ح
ضرروی ضروری letters swapped
كتاب کتاب Arabic ك instead of Urdu ک
کتابیںاور کتابیں اور missing space

Common problems and fixes

Proper names are flagged

Names of people, places and brands are often missing from dictionaries. Choose Ignore all. If a common name is flagged, report it and we will add it.

The whole text is underlined

The text may not be Unicode Urdu. Text copied from InPage arrives as symbols, and some PDFs give reversed or joined-letter text. Convert it first with the InPage to Unicode converter or repair it with Fix Broken Urdu Text, then check again.

A suggestion list is empty

The word is too far from any dictionary word to guess, often a typing slip of several letters or a word in another language. Retype it, or try the Urdu Typing Pad with its phonetic keyboard.

My aerab were removed

They are never removed. Diacritics are only ignored when looking words up. If you choose a suggestion, the replacement word is inserted without aerab, so add them again if you need them.

Who uses the Urdu spell checker

  • Journalists and sub-editors checking copy before it goes to print or online.
  • Students and teachers proofreading assignments, theses and question papers.
  • Writers and translators polishing manuscripts and subtitles.
  • Social media and marketing teams checking captions and ad copy before they go live.
  • Anyone converting Roman Urdu: run the result of the Roman Urdu to Urdu converter through here as a final check.

Private by design

Your text never leaves your device. The dictionary is downloaded to your browser and every word is checked locally. Nothing is uploaded, logged or saved, not even the words you choose to ignore.

Frequently asked questions

Which dictionary does the Urdu spell checker use?
It uses the open-source Urdu Dictionary (version 0.64) originally prepared for Firefox and LibreOffice spell checking, with more than 107,000 words, licensed under the GNU LGPL. It is supplemented with everyday words from an open frequency list and a list of modern words such as ایپ، ویب سائٹ، ایموجی.
Why is a correct word underlined?
No dictionary contains every word. Names, places, new loanwords and rare inflections may be missing. If you are sure the word is correct, choose "Ignore all" and it will not be flagged again while the page is open. Please also tell us the word through the "Report a missing word" link so we can add it.
Does it check grammar?
No. It checks individual words: spelling, Arabic look-alike letters and missing spaces. It does not check gender agreement, word order or punctuation. Read your text through as well.
What does the gold underline mean?
The word uses Arabic letters that look like Urdu ones, usually from an Arabic keyboard or a PDF: ي instead of ی, ك instead of ک, ه instead of ہ or ھ. They break searching and look wrong in Nastaliq. Choose the suggestion to replace them. To fix a whole document at once, use Fix Broken Urdu Text.
Does it work with aerab (zabar, zer, pesh)?
Yes. Diacritics are ignored when looking words up, so دِل and دل are both accepted, and your aerab are left untouched.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The dictionary is downloaded to your browser once (about 250 KB) and every check happens on your device. Your text is not sent anywhere or stored.
