Why a dedicated Urdu word counter?

Most word counters are built for English. They split words on spaces, treat everything else as punctuation, and estimate reading time at English speed. With Urdu, that leads to odd results. Urdu punctuation such as ۔ and ، gets counted as words when it has spaces around it. Aerab can inflate the character count. Invisible characters copied from websites quietly change the totals.

This counter is built for Urdu first, and it handles English in the same text too. It knows Urdu punctuation, counts a letter with its diacritics as a single character, keeps ZWNJ compounds together, and gives you separate counts for Urdu and English words, which is useful for bilingual posts and code-mixed writing.

What each number means

Count What is counted
Words Runs of letters or digits separated by spaces. Lone punctuation is ignored.
Characters Every visible character and space, with each letter plus its aerab counted once. Line breaks are not counted.
Characters (no spaces) The same, without spaces and tabs. Useful for SMS limits and form fields.
Sentences Pieces ending in ۔ ؟ ! ? or a sentence-ending full stop.
Paragraphs Non-empty lines.
Reading time Urdu words ÷ 180 + English words ÷ 230 per minute.
Speaking time All words ÷ 130 per minute.

Worked example

Paste this short bilingual paragraph:

Text

اردو ایک خوبصورت زبان ہے۔ میں روزانہ WhatsApp پر اردو میں لکھتا ہوں۔ کیا آپ بھی لکھتے ہیں؟

CountsWords: 18 (Urdu 17, English 1) Sentences: 3 Paragraphs: 1 Reading time: 6 sec

The ۔ and ؟ end sentences but are not counted as words. WhatsApp is counted as an English word.

Common problems and fixes

The word count seems too high

Check for punctuation typed with spaces on both sides in text that came from another counter or from Word, and for words split by a stray space inside them, e.g. کی جیے. Running the text through Fix Broken Urdu Text removes double spaces and fixes spacing around Urdu punctuation.

The text came from InPage and shows as symbols

Then it is not Unicode yet, and every symbol is counted as a separate word. Convert it first with the InPage to Unicode converter, then paste the result here.

The character count is different from Twitter/X or SMS

Social networks and phone carriers count characters in their own ways. Many treat each diacritic or emoji as several units. Use our number as a guide and allow a small margin when you are close to a limit.

Who uses the Urdu word counter

  • Students meeting word limits for assignments, essays and theses in Urdu.
  • Journalists and editors fitting news copy into a column or a time slot.
  • Bloggers and SEO writers checking article length and keyword repetition.
  • Translators quoting projects by word count.
  • Voice-over artists and speech writers estimating how long a script will take to read aloud.

Before counting, text copied from a PDF should be repaired with Fix Broken Urdu Text, and long drafts are worth a pass through the Urdu spell checker. To write numbers in a counted text as words, use Number to Urdu Words. The guide why Urdu text copied from a PDF looks broken explains why such text often counts wrong.

Private by design

Your text is counted on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, logged or saved, not even in browser storage.

Frequently asked questions

How does the counter decide what an Urdu word is?
A word is any run of letters or numbers between spaces or line breaks. Punctuation such as ۔ ، ؟ on its own is not counted. A zero-width non-joiner (ZWNJ) inside a compound word does not split it, so خوش‌نما counts as one word.
Why does my count differ from Microsoft Word?
Word and this tool agree on most text. Differences usually come from punctuation typed with spaces around it (Word counts a lone ، as a word; we do not) and from Urdu compounds written with a space, such as خوش نما, which both tools count as two words.
Are diacritics (aerab) counted as characters?
No. A letter with its zabar, zer or pesh counts as one character, which matches how readers see it. So دِل is two characters, not three.
How is reading time calculated?
We assume about 180 words per minute for Urdu and 230 for English, typical silent reading speeds for adults, and add them up for mixed text. Speaking time uses about 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for speeches and voice-overs.
How are sentences counted?
A sentence ends at ۔ ؟ ! or ?, at a full stop followed by a space (so 3.5 does not split), or at a blank line. Poetry without punctuation counts each stanza as one sentence.
Is there a limit on how much text I can count?
No fixed limit. A full-length thesis or a 100,000-character article counts in a fraction of a second on most phones and computers.
Is my text saved?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is stored or sent, so it is safe for unpublished articles and exam answers.
